The Amazon Rainforested is located in South America and stretches across many countries such as Brazil, Peru, Columbia, Venezuala, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and  French Guiana. The rainforest covers 2,100,000 square miles of the 2,700,000 square mile Amazon Basin. Up untill the 1970's much of the rainforest remained intact, however since then it has been the victim of severe deforestation , some of the highest levels in the entire world. Because a high percentage of the Amazon Rainforest is located in Brazil, a large ammount of the deforestation occurs here. There are also high levels of deforestation in Peru and Bolivia however. Much of the deforestation in this region is attributed to the building of roads, mining, the clearing of land for cattle and agriculture, and human developement. It has been reported that since the 1970's as much as 10% of the Amazon Rainforest has been deforested. Two of the main methods that are being use to deforest this region is clear cutting and the slash and burn method. The slash and burn method is when the chop down most of the trees at the beginning of the dry season, and burn the rest at the end of the dry season. Alot of deforestation has also been attributed to the illegal logging industry. Brazillian and world officials are doing all they can to combat the deforestation, as it is such a crutial area of land. One of the main methods to do so as well is Remote Sensing.
